Six Challenges Facing China's Development of High-Precision Stamping Dies

Stamping dies are widely used across industries including automotive, everyday hardware and electronics, and are among the most widely applied dies. High-end stamping dies require extensive design and manufacturing expertise. In producing high-end precision stamping dies, we mainly face the following six issues.

1. Die Design and Manufacturing

Overall, China's innovation level in precision stamping die design is slightly behind foreign countries; many advanced die designs, processes and equipment lag behind. In core production technology and theory, China is generally trailing and still catching up with advanced foreign die equipment.

2. Die Service Life

Due to factors such as tooling data, heat treatment and installation techniques, the service life of Chinese stamping dies lags international levels. Especially in maintenance frequency, our dies show a noticeable gap, reducing productivity and increasing maintenance costs, which harms market competitiveness.

3. Die Testing and Reliability

Design and production of high-end precision dies require both production and theoretical support. Fault detection in stamping equipment not only demonstrates die design and manufacturing quality but also reflects overall application performance. Compared with world-leading die companies, China's die testing capabilities are relatively weak. Advanced pre-production testing techniques used abroad are not yet common domestically, leaving a gap in reliability and stability.

4. Lagging Theoretical Research on High-Precision Dies

Designing fine stamping dies requires very high professional expertise. Although China has matured die design and production processes, theoretical research lags behind, slowing design iteration. The division of labor in production is not yet sufficiently specialized. In die materials and standard parts, domestic equipment slightly lags foreign counterparts, directly affecting many stamping machine developments.

5. New Die Technologies

With new technologies and products emerging, foreign stamping dies have evolved from traditional single-function serial dies to progressive and multi-station dies. China still needs to expand core technology research for high-precision dies to broaden applications and catch up with international advances.

6. Supporting Facilities and Components

Core and supporting components are fundamental for rapid die development. Due to issues in heat treatment, materials and standard components, many high-precision die parts and support components are still imported.
