Development Status of Automotive Plastic Parts Processing

In recent years China's automotive industry has developed rapidly, with annual vehicle output exceeding 4 million units. Following international trends, annual consumption of modified plastics in the automotive sector is expected to exceed 500,000 tons. As vehicle lightweighting advances, the use of plastic parts is increasing. Developed countries use plastic content as an indicator of automotive design and manufacturing level; in Germany, plastics account for about 15% of vehicle materials. With rapid technological progress and new materials and processes, demands for vehicle quality have risen, focusing on comfort, safety, environmental performance and aesthetics. Under these trends, vehicle lightweighting and cost reduction have become key design goals.

As one direction for future automotive development, plastic component molding and processing technologies are receiving more industry attention. Producing plastic parts for automotive components aims for energy-efficient, environmentally friendly and multifunctional products while simplifying manufacturing steps and processes. Replacing metal parts with plastics reduces metal usage, lowers vehicle weight and reduces operating costs, improving fuel economy and emissions.

During vehicle production, metal components are gradually replaced by plastic parts. Applications of plastic components are expanding, including seats, headliners, handles and lighting. However, instability in plastic molding processes remains a technical challenge that can limit production quality. Practitioners should analyze production issues in actual processing and summarize findings to guide future process improvements and industry strategy.
