Laser Displacement Sensors | Laser Distance Sensors | Application Areas of Laser Thickness Gauges
Lasers are widely used in measurement and inspection with rich technical capabilities and clear impact on production and daily life. What are the common application areas of Laser Displacement Sensors? Today we discuss typical applications.
Laser displacement sensors are commonly used instruments for measuring length, distance, vibration, speed and direction; they can also be used for flaw detection and airborne pollutant monitoring. Laser displacement sensors offer high accuracy, wide measurement range, simple maintenance and strong durability, making them useful across many industries.

1. Dimensional measurement: small-part position recognition, conveyor monitoring, overlap and coverage detection, robot positioning control, equipment status and position checks (through holes), liquid level monitoring, thickness measurement, vibration analysis and crash testing, automotive-related testing.
2. Thickness measurement of metal sheets and foils: measure the thickness of metal sheets and detect wrinkles, holes or overlaps to avoid machine faults.
3. Cylinder measurement: angle, length, inner/outer diameter eccentricity, taper, concentricity and surface profile.
4. Production-line fill-level inspection: integrate laser displacement sensors into filling production lines. As filled products pass the sensor, the sensor detects surface reflection to determine fill correctness and quantities.
5. Electronic component inspection: place the tested component between two laser scanners and read data from sensors to verify component dimensions and completeness.
6. Uniformity checks: place several laser sensors along the motion direction of a workpiece and directly output measurement values. Values can also be processed in software and interpreted according to signal readings.
7. Length measurement: place measured components on a conveyor at a specified position; the laser sensor detects the component and the triggered laser scanner measures length concurrently.
These are common industrial applications for laser displacement sensors. Many models exist; for example, Atonm offers five laser displacement sensor models with accuracies starting at 10 μm and detection distances of 25–600 mm, suitable for lithium battery, printing & packaging, coating machines and intelligent manufacturing. Below are five product links for reference.
