Fiber-Optic Sensors: What Advantages Do Fiber Amplifiers Offer?
Fiber-Optic Sensor uses UV exposure to create a periodic refractive index structure in the fiber core. When a certain bandwidth of light enters the sensor via a circulator, the fiber sensor reflects specific wavelengths due to wavelength selectivity, and the reflected wavelength drift is measured by a demodulator or spectrometer.

Fiber sensors can measure strain and temperature. Changes in sensor period and effective refractive index affect the reflected spectrum. Any physical process that changes these parameters causes Bragg wavelength drift.
The sensing process relies on external parameters affecting the sensor period or effective refractive index, shifting the center wavelength of emitted light.
Advantages of fiber-optic sensors and fiber amplifiers include:
(1) Simple probe structure, small size and light weight, suitable for strain and structural damage detection.
(2) Natural compatibility with fiber, immunity to electromagnetic interference, easy fiber connection, low loss, excellent spectral characteristics and high reliability.
(3) Non-conductive operation with minimal impact on the measured medium, corrosion resistance and EMI tolerance, suitable for harsh environments.
(4) Lightweight and flexible; multiple gratings can be written on a single fiber to form sensing arrays.
(5) Unique capability to deploy distributed sensing along fiber paths to measure fields over extended regions.
