Principle and Applications of Magnetic Scale Read Heads

Principle:

A magnetic scale is a sensor manufactured using alternating magnetic poles. The base is a uniformly magnetized steel strip. S and N poles are evenly spaced; the read head counts changes in S/N poles to determine position.

The magnetic scale uses magnetic-electric design: the read head determines absolute position via magnetic induction. It replaces traditional encoders and overcomes common optical encoder issues. Magnetic scale read heads are vibration-, corrosion- and contamination-resistant, reliable and simple in structure.

Magnetic scales perform especially well for measurement ranges over 2 meters, and can reach ranges up to 30 meters, offering advantages in large machine tools and harsh environments.

Atonm Magnetic Scale Read Heads (MRR Series):

The Atonm magnetic read head system consists of the magnetic scale and the read head.

Read Head: a sensor head with integrated electronics that measures magnetic information from the magnetic scale and converts it into signals for other electronic devices.

Magnetic Scale: manufactured by magnetizing a steel strip with alternating N-S poles. Changes in field strength across positions let the read head determine displacement.
