How Is the Resolution of a Magnetic Readhead System Calculated?

Magnetic readhead systems are key components in modern measurement, and resolution is a critical metric. This article explains resolution calculation methods and influencing factors.

Resolution definition

Resolution is the smallest distinguishable measurement increment. For magnetic systems, it depends on sensor sensitivity, noise level and any disk or codewheel resolution in rotary setups.

Calculation approaches

1. Magnetic sensitivity: if sensitivity is S (mV/G) and noise is N (mV), magnetic resolution R (G) is R = N / S.

2. Code disk resolution: for rotary systems, if a disk has P pulses per revolution, angular resolution D = 360° / P.

3. Combined resolution: overall resolution may be computed as R_total = sqrt(R_sensor^2 + R_disk^2), accounting for sensor and disk contributions.

Factors affecting resolution include sensor sensitivity, system noise, mechanical installation and environment. By optimizing design and reducing noise, resolution can be improved to meet high-precision requirements.
