Project background
The customer specializes in thermal dissipation components and automation equipment. On their electronic component stamping and assembly line, double-feeds occurred when automatically loading small metal pieces (1.3 x 3.3 mm, thickness 0.28 mm) into transparent carrier tape pockets. The customer wanted precise sensing to detect double-feeds and remove faulty picks to improve line performance and reliability.

Solution
Atonm engineers analyzed the thin, small parts and recommended a laser thickness measurement sensor solution.

1. Laser sensor selection and installation
Install an Atonm laser thickness sensor beside the robot's pick station to measure thickness on the detection platform by non-contact high-precision measurement.
2. Detection and signal output
After the robot places a part on the platform the laser sensor measures thickness in real time and determines whether the part is single, double or multiple layers, outputting the corresponding signal to the host.
3. Host processing
The host system processes the sensor signal and responds immediately. On double or multiple layers the system raises an alarm or instructs the robot to re-pick, effectively removing defective picks.
Customer benefits
By deploying the Atonm laser thickness sensor, the customer achieved:
1. Improved throughput: real-time detection and automated response reduced production stoppages due to double-feeds.
2. Lower scrap rates: precise thickness detection and instant feedback reduced defects caused by double-feeds.
3. Greater process stability: automation improved stability even during peak production.
4. Reduced labor cost: sensor automation reduced reliance on manual inspection.
5. Higher customer satisfaction: improved quality and efficiency enhanced market competitiveness.
Summary
The Atonm laser thickness sensor for 3C component double-feed detection solved the customer's overlap issues and provided competitive advantages through innovation and professional support.
