Project Background
Tesla Shanghai operates at high capacity. Its stamping lines for body parts face sheet overlap during automated feeding. While large heavy panels can be handled by suction or vibration, smaller or interior panels cannot. Overfeed can cause die jams, material waste, or catastrophic mold damage. Preventing overlap before stamping is critical for stable automated production.
Model 3 (left) integrates many parts that become fewer in Model Y
Objectives:
1. Ensure orderly automated feeding and prevent robotic gripper from picking overlapping sheets.
2. Stabilize production and increase throughput.
Solution:
Tesla Shanghai uses Atonm MDSC-1000C high-performance communication-capable Metal Double-Sheet Detector. When the robot places a sheet into the detection range, a single-sheet signal advances the part; a double-sheet signal returns the picked sheet for re-pick. The MDSC-1000C features built-in MODBUS485 communication for high-integration lines and allows touchscreen operation and recipe control for fast material switching and production monitoring.

Atonm detection systems integrate with ERP/MES to enable engineers to switch material profiles quickly, improving commissioning efficiency and providing real-time monitoring.
