Photoelectric Sensor No-signal Causes and Troubleshooting
When a sensor shows no signal many users assume the photoelectric sensor is faulty, but that is not always true. This article analyzes common causes.
1. Check the sensor itself
Inspect wiring and configuration. For through-beam sensors both emitter and receiver require power; retro-reflective types need a sensor head and reflector. Ensure stable power with correct polarity; reversed polarity prevents output signal.
2. Optical alignment
Ensure emitter and receiver optical axes are aligned; for reflective setups align sensor head and reflector.
3. Object suitability
Make sure the detected object meets size and reflectivity requirements; transparent or very small objects may not be detected. Reflective-type sensors are sensitive to object color — darker colors shorten detection distance.
4. Environmental interference
Excessive ambient light, dust accumulation on the sensor head, tightly spaced sensors causing mutual interference, or electrical interference from nearby high-power equipment can all cause no-signal conditions. Clean sensor surfaces and apply shielding or filtering as needed.
If all checks are clear, return the unit to the manufacturer for further testing.
Photoelectric sensors detect objects by beam blocking or reflection. Objects need not be metal; any surface that reflects light can be detected. The Color Sensor uses RGB components to compare reflected signals and recognize surface color for identification and sorting.
