Design Principles, Features and Applications of Stamping Presses
A stamping press (punch press) is used in industrial production to stamp various metal sheets and coils. With appropriately shaped dies, a press can perform blanking, punching, forming, deep drawing, trimming, fine punching, riveting, extrusion and other operations. Stamping is widely used across industries — switch sockets, cups, cabinets, plates, computer chassis, and even components for aerospace.
The design principle of a stamping press converts rotary motion into linear motion. The main motor drives a flywheel; through a clutch it drives gears, crankshafts (or eccentric gears), connecting rods and other mechanisms to produce linear movement of the slide. Compared with other machining methods, stamping saves material and energy and delivers high production efficiency with relatively low operator skill requirements. By developing diverse die sets, stamping can produce parts that were previously difficult to manufacture.
Features of stamping presses
Stamping presses are widely used in electronics, communications, computers, household appliances, furniture and automotive hardware parts.
1. High structural strength
(1) Steel plate welding with a high-strength internal frame; heat treatment removes internal stresses before assembly so the press can operate for long periods without deformation.
(2) Structural components carry loads uniformly and steel usage is balanced.
2. Stable dimensional accuracy
After heat treatment, key parts such as crankshafts, gears and drive shafts have high wear resistance and long-term stability, ensuring consistent precision.
3. Safe and reliable operation
Modern clutch/brake combinations provide high responsiveness and accurate positioning. International high-end machines use dual electromagnetic control valves and overload protection to ensure accurate and safe slide motion.
4. Automated, labor-saving and efficient production
Presses can be equipped with automatic feeding devices, error detection, pre-cut and pre-break devices to enable fully automated production with low cost and high efficiency.
5. Slide adjustment mechanisms
Slide adjustment can be manual or motorized, providing convenient, reliable and fast operation with precision up to 0.1 mm.
In stamping equipment, the magnetic scale read head is a commonly used stroke measurement sensor for press heads. It is an open and reliable linear measurement system resistant to oil, water, dust, vibration and harsh environments; it can replace glass scales and displacement sensors and significantly reduce cost.
