How to Clean and Maintain Magnetic Scale Read Heads

Magnetic scales play an important role in production lines, but using them without proper cleaning and maintenance is not enough. Cleaning and maintenance are essential to extend the service life of magnetic scales.

In modern machine tools, high-volume coolant flow is often used, and coolant spray may land on magnetic scales, creating a humid environment with aerosolized coolant. Under such conditions, magnetic scales can suffer condensation forming films on the read head. Over time, this can degrade optical projection and leave water marks on the scale, seriously affecting measurement accuracy. If chips accumulate near the scale, drainage may be impaired and the scale could be immersed in coolant and debris, which may damage the scale and halt the machine.

Common problem areas include the read head, where parts may age or wear mechanically, and improper installation of the main scale body that can reduce accuracy. For cleaning and maintenance, compressed air can remove heavy coolant spray or dust, but the air must be filtered and meet ISO8573-1 standards. For oil and chip cleaning, use high-purity alcohol or suitable cleaners (such as acetone or manufacturer-recommended cleaners). Keeping the working environment clean effectively preserves the magnetic scale.

These measures help ensure normal operation of the magnetic scale, extend service life, and improve equipment efficiency and quality.
