Magnetic scale read head: use on gantry machines
In modern CNC machines, the magnetic scale read head is a high‑precision device widely used on gantry machines to provide accurate positioning in X, Y, and Z axes. This article covers its working principle and advantages.
Magnetic scale read heads are non‑contact displacement sensors that use closely spaced magnetic stripes to generate tiny magnetic field variations as the scale moves. Magnetic sensing elements detect these variations and convert them to electrical signals, which are processed to compute displacement.
On gantry machines, the read head is mounted on the moving beam to control tool position. The CNC system compares read head signals with the desired path and issues motor commands to achieve precise machining.
Advantages include high precision (sub‑micron possible), high reliability due to non‑contact measurement, high speed (suitable for high‑speed machining), and easy installation. Magnetic read heads help ensure machining accuracy and efficiency in gantry‑style CNC equipment.
