Project Background
In can lid production, the feeder first separates single metal sheets using magnetic separation, then the press forms the sheets. When the metal surface is clean, magnetic separation reliably supplies single sheets; however, if oil is present on the metal or surface tension between two sheets is high, the separator may pick two sheets as one (double-feed), increasing production cost and potentially damaging molds.

Project Objective
Objective: Accurately and effectively detect double-sheet overlap.
Challenges: 1. Small sheet area and high line speed; 2. Installation area close to the magnetic separator.
Solution
This solution uses Atonm Metal Double-Sheet Detector MDSC-1000C. When the robot arm places the sheet within the detector range, the detector is moved into position to protect it and avoid collisions during feeding. If the detector reports a single-sheet signal, the robot extends the pickup arm; if a double-sheet signal is detected, the robot stops and an alarm is output.
The detector consists of a controller and sensors. The controller processes current signals while the sensors transmit and receive magnetic field signals. Working principle: two sensors form an electromagnetic field when powered. When a metal sheet passes through, different thicknesses induce different voltages; the controller analyzes current differences to determine single or double sheets.

Atonm Metal Double-Sheet Detector MDSC-1000C supports multiple trigger modes adapted to site conditions, real-time data transmission, and manual-triggered events. This model includes built-in 485 communication and can store up to 100 material recipes; when switching materials, operators can recall stored recipes via touchscreen without reconfiguration.
