Laser Sensor | Roll Material Curvature Detection Solution

Project Background:

Expanded polyethylene foam (EPE) is a common packaging material. At a Dongguan EPE manufacturer, rolls were showing uneven winding because the material was not tensioned properly during winding.

The customer required a sensor to monitor fabric tension and output an alarm when the fabric sag exceeded allowable limits.

Challenge:

Non-contact measurement: the diaphragm is separated from the laser sensor by a distance, so the system must accurately measure the straight-line distance to determine fabric tension.

Solution:

(Atonm LD1-H400 Laser Sensor)

This solution uses the Atonm LD1-H400 laser displacement sensor mounted on a metal bracket above the roll. By measuring the straight-line distance from the sensor to the web, curvature of the roll is determined. When curvature exceeds the minimum threshold, the PLC identifies excessive sag and increases the winder speed to tighten the web.

Compared with other solutions, this laser sensor offers high accuracy, long detection range, strong stability, and simple operation. The sensor works with the PLC to automatically control web tension.
