Detecting Adhesive Ring Presence | Atonm Color Sensor in Headphone Production

Project Background

The customer focuses on R&D, design, production and marketing of electroacoustic products and aims to deliver high-quality wearable headphones. The customer faced a challenge: detecting whether a black double-sided adhesive ring is attached inside the headphone shell. Previously they used a vision system, but due to the small size of the adhesive ring the vision approach was not ideal. The customer sought a more accurate and efficient detection solution. After testing samples, Atonm engineers chose a CL1 color sensor with a small spot probe.

Solution

Installation and tuning steps:

1. Sensor selection: choose a high-precision color sensor to identify the spectral signature of the black adhesive ring.

2. Probe design: use a small-spot probe to ensure detection of tiny adhesive rings as the shell passes the spot.

3. Installation & commissioning: mount probes at the proper station so that when the shell passes the spot, the sensor detects the ring and outputs a signal; if no ring is present, no signal is output.

After commissioning, the system ran stably and accuracy significantly improved, solving the customer’s detection issue.

After field validation, the solution was adopted and achieved reduced misses and false reports. The stable operation earned high customer recognition.
