During large-area PCB board feeding, it is necessary to avoid double-sheet situations when suction cups pick up boards, because misdetecting double boards may cause incorrect assembly on the production line, wasting time and resources. However, using through-beam double-sheet detection methods (ultrasonic or magnetic) can also introduce serious issues. This article introduces Atonm’s new solution for a PCB substrate packaging company in Guangzhou.
Customer Introduction
The customer is a Guangzhou-based company specializing in PCB packaging research and manufacturing. Over the years they have been committed to providing high-quality electronic packaging solutions to meet broad market needs. Their production facility is equipped with advanced technology and equipment, offering comprehensive PCB packaging services including SMT and THT.
Project Requirements
There has long been a need for double-sheet detection in PCB board loading and unloading. Common methods include ultrasonic and magnetic detection. These techniques typically determine whether a picked board is single or double by placing through-beam dual probes at the pickup path. However, because the board may remain suspended for a relatively long time under these conditions, there is a risk of the board falling during the process, causing significant loss.

Solution
After understanding the customer's pain points, Atonm engineers proposed using a single-sensor detection solution. By installing a sensor on one side of the suction cup, double-sheet detection can be realized. This approach reduces the number of sensors on the line and optimizes the movement path of the production line.
Customer engineers raised concerns that the single sensor might contact the PCB and scratch the product. This is a valid concern since product appearance and quality are critical in production environments.
To mitigate this risk, preventive measures can be applied, such as using non-scratch materials like rubber rings to cushion the probe. Atonm’s single-sensor technology can accurately determine single or double sheets even with a small gap, avoiding potential scratching risks.
Customer Benefits
The customer has adopted this solution and optimized their board handling path. The chief engineer expressed great satisfaction: the solution meets the requirements and delivers tangible benefits in practical application.
