1. Industry background
In lithium battery production, the winding machine forms the cell core by winding anode and cathode materials. Deviations in material width, thickness or tension during winding can destabilize cell performance; precise winding is therefore essential.
2. Company
An Dongguan customer founded in 2014 is a leading lithium battery equipment manufacturer focused on winding machines for EVs, energy storage and consumer electronics, holding ISO9001 and multiple patents.
3. Project background
The customer asked Atonm engineers about deviation correction (web guiding) in winding to improve consistency and quality. The team evaluated fiber and laser displacement sensors and recommended a solution based on on-site conditions.
4. Solution
Atonm engineers assessed the environment and determined the requirement: a fast response, high precision sensor with immunity to environmental harmonics. Atonm selected a fiber sensor as the preferred choice due to its high sensitivity, strong anti-interference performance and fast response.

Laser displacement sensors can be used for web guiding but are more susceptible to environmental interference and typically more expensive than fiber sensors. Atonm therefore recommended the FA1-A3S fiber sensor for high-speed winding:
1. High sensitivity to small light intensity changes for precise position and deformation detection.
2. Strong anti-interference capability for harsh environments.
3. Fast response to detect offset and issue alerts quickly.
4. No electromagnetic interference and easy integration.
5. Customer benefits
After one month of trial, the customer reported improved stability over alternative products. Benefits include higher production efficiency, better winding quality, lower costs and improved safety.
